Mr. Spurgeon once preached what in his judgment was one of his poorest sermons. He stammered and floundered, and when he got through he felt that it had been a complete failure. He was greatly humiliated, and when he got home he fell on his knees and said, “Lord, God, Thou canst do something with nothing. Bless that poor sermon.”
And all through the week he uttered that prayer. He woke up in the night and prayed about it. He determined that the next Sunday he would redeem himself by preaching a great sermon. Sure enough, the next Sunday the sermon went off beautifully. At the close the people crowded about him and covered him with praise. Spurgeon went home pleased with himself, and that night he slept like a baby. But he said to himself, “I’ll watch the results of those two sermons.” What were they?
From the one that has seemed a failure he was able to trace forty-one conversions. And from that magnificent sermon he was unable to discover that a single soul was saved. The Spirit of God used the one and did not use the other. We can do nothing without the Spirit who helps our infirmities.

The challenge of Jesus as Lord is nothing new nor fresh. Nearly 2000 years ago, the Caesar’s began to view themselves as divine. They enjoyed the titles of Lord, God, etc. The worship of the Caesars spread throughout the Roman empire. The early Christians however gave their sole allegiance to Jesus as Lord of their life. The Christians of that day subverted the power of Caesar. In his book Holy Subversion: Allegiance to Christ in an Age of Rivals Wax states:
The early Christians were persecuted and killed, not only because they had personal relationships with Jesus Christ, but also because they were proclaiming Jesus as Lord. They were applying Caesar’s titles of honor to Jesus Christ. They were subverting the authority of Caesar by appealing to the lordship of Jesus.
In our society today, the lordship of Christ is still being challenged by the Caesars of our day. Trevin Wax seeks to expose these idols and subvert the idols back into their rightful place. Wax addresses, the self, success, money, leisure, sex, power and evangelism as idols that are claiming our allegiance.
There are two things that I really enjoyed about the book. First, I enjoyed how extremely practical Trevin Wax was in his writing. Not only did He address the idol but he gave practical ways to subvert the idol. Second, Wax addresses many modern day idols that don’t get much attention. The Caesar of Leisure is plaguing our society today. Yet not much is written on the subject. However, Wax takes the idol and challenges Christians to put it back under the feet of Jesus.
Holy Subversion is biblical, practical, and timely. I often found myself pausing to reflect while keeping a pen in hand to underline. I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to live out the allegiance of Christ in a world of modern idols. Wax is calling for Christians to make a difference by subverting modern idols and putting their allegiance in Jesus alone as Lord. This book is great for both Mature and New Christians.

One of the best books I have read in awhile. Spurgeon on Sibbes: ”Sibbes never wastes the student’s time, he scatters pearls and diamonds with both hands.” Sibbes centers on Isaiah 42:1-3. I highly recommend reading it. It is good for the soul. Sibbes says “There is more mercy in Christ, than sin in us”. You can get it here.

A friendly place is “making me feel like I belong” and “making me feel comfortable”. Culture is inclined to restaurants, pubs and sports bars as places to meet new friends.

So here it is at 2:48 in the morning and I can’t bring myself to stop thinking and go to bed. There is something about me that craves these moments. The moments where I can’t bring myself to stop thinking even at the expense of sleep. And I love to sleep. But every now and then something will catch my attention and I can’t let go of it. I can’t help to think about what living this life for the glory of God and He alone means personally and corporately in my life. Reflecting is easy to do when you aren’t honest. It’s easy to do when I don’t desire more and more of God. But reflection becomes extremely difficult when you present yourself to God. When the unholy meets the holy, there is the radical collision that occurs. We all know Isaiah’s response to God (Isaiah 6:1-8). But consider Peter’s response in Luke 5:8 right after Jesus has appeared to him to call him to be his disciple.
But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”
What was it that immediately drove Peter to fall at Jesus’ knees? Here is a man that has been in Peter’s presence for a very short time. He seemed like a know it all in Peter’s own profession of fishing (Read Luke 5:1-11 for context). Peter was out all night fishing and caught nothing. He was cleaning his nets with no intention of going back out until the next night. He didn’t need Jesus to rub it in. It was useless to put down his nets. After all, it was definitely the wrong time and wrong place to put in the deep end if you wanted to catch fish. Every experienced fisherman knew that. But at Jesus’ words he put down the net. What made him do this? Was it the idea that he might catch a fish? This could hardly be so.
My answer to all of this is quite simply Jesus’ presence. The presence and glory of Jesus standing there in front of him drove him to fall to his knees. Peter in the middle of all these fish, fell at the knees of Jesus and worshipped him. The Greek literally says “fell at the knees of Jesus”. Jesus’ presence caused Peter to recoil at his sinfulness. It was the presence of Jesus that drove Peter to lay his nets down again. All Peter needed was the presence of Jesus to recognize his sinfulness and he was content to follow Jesus. He didn’t need any more answers. There were no conditions put in place for Peter. By following Jesus he would get His presence and that was sufficient. Peter understood God’s presence in that moment and place. He would come to know more as it unfolded but for now Jesus’ presence was enough for Peter.
The closer we get to God, the more we recognize our own sinfulness and rightly so. With Peter we meet the Holy who perfects us through the Holy Spirit (John 14:26, Hebrews 12:1-2, Philippians 1:6). God lives and works with sinful fallen humans whom he loves beyond our comprehension. The more we reflect the more we see we need to change. The more we realize we are still being perfected.
But for now as I wrestle to reflect, I just want God’s presence. Just like Peter I want God’s presence. I am ok with the unfolding of future events to come. I don’t need all the answers now. I just want God’s presence more and more in my life. As I reflect, I want to be brought to my knees over and over again by God’s presence. My prayer for you is that you will desire God’s presence in your life that will drive you to your knees. What stirs your affections for God? For now it is nothing more than simply is presence drawing me to my knees confessing my sinfulness to a creator who passionately and intimately loves me and saved me!
Soon I will be looking at the lives of twelve disciples in which I hope to write a series of blog posts on. I have always been intrigued by the men that Jesus choose and how they interacted with each other and the world around them. Stay tuned for more..
